Fifteen-year-old Jeanne lives in an orphanage in the mountains. After running away, she finds refuge in a film studio in a city, where an adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale "The Snow Queen" is being shot. The Snow Queen is played by a moody diva (Marion Cotillard). Jeanne pretends to be an extra and gets dangerously close to the capricious and manipulative film star, who thinks she sees herself in the teenager. Magnificent images with kaleidoscopic reflections and light refractions, as well as an eerie sound design, combine to create a nightmarish fairy tale that is also a deliberation on the fascination of cinema. Fantasy and reality blur in the film projector's beam of light. (bik)
